An Unknown Path (Pauline Mok)

Joshua Chapter 3 records the story of the Israelites facing a new challenge ¡V crossing the Jordan River. In it, we see the wonders God performed for them, and the instructions God required of them. Today, as we Christians are facing a new year, the same instructions can be applied to us. What are these instructions, then?

1.     Follow the Ark of Covenant: The Ark represented God. The Israelites could not move forward on their own. They had to wait until the Ark set out before they could move, because it was a new path that they had never trod before (v.3-4). They were required to wait for God¡¦s guidance. Today, at the beginning of a new year, we start a new path which we have never traveled before. Therefore we, like the Israelites, must follow God¡¦s guidance, rather than venturing out on our own and bringing unnecessary troubles upon ourselves.

2.     Pay close attention: The Israelites couldn¡¦t follow the Ark too closely.  They had to keep a distance of 2000 cubits because the Ark was holy, and only God¡¦s chosen priests could carry it. Others would die even by touching it. So the Israelites had to be careful to keep the distance, while still following attentively. Today we also need to follow God attentively, but we are blessed because we can follow Him closely. We have the Word of God, the Holy Spirit, and the privilege of going to God directly. Ever since Jesus Christ died on the Cross for us and opened the door to salvation, we can approach the throne of grace with confidence to receive mercy and grace to help us in our time of need (Heb. 4:16). God so loved us, how can we not focus on Him?

3.     Consecrate themselves: For the Israelites to see God perform wonders among them, they had to consecrate themselves, departing from uncleanness and sin (v.5). Similarly, if we want to see God move on our behalf, we must keep ourselves clean, confess our sins, and repent so that we will not hinder the work of God.  David knew that if he harbored sin in his heart, the Lord would not listen (Psm 66:18). We know a clean heart is very important before God.

4.     Launch out by faith: God did not automatically cut off the flow of Jordan River. Instead, He required the priests to stand in the river (v.8) before the water was stopped (v.13) for the Israelites to cross over dry ground. If the priests had been afraid and refused to go into the flooded river, they would have missed the miracle God intended for them. By the same token, if we know what the will of God is, we must step out in faith without hesitation, and God will take responsibility for our well being.

The Israelites obeyed God thoroughly, and in doing so were able to cross the Jordan, a path they had never trod before, safely without problems. May we learn the lessons of trust and obedience from them. Allow God to guide us through whatever uncertainties and challenges come our way this New Year.
